Rong Ji Cooked Food, Tekka Food Centre, Singapore

Tekka Food Centre at 665 Buffalo Rd is not a place I frequent often because it's quite out of my way and parking there isn't particularly convenient. I've always been curious about what this place has to offer so I rocked up early for breakfast one day only to find out that this isn't a breakfast joint since so many stalls were still closed. I found this little stall selling Chinese steamed savory cakes and since there was a little queue, thought, "Why not?"

I'm not a big fan of cakes (be it savory) for breakfast because I prefer to sink my choppers into something with more protein but these were surprising tasty.

The steamed rice cakes were smooth without leaving that sticky, starchy feeling on your palate. The preserved Chinese vegetable condiment on top was also not overstewed which left it with a rather hearty bite and the generous addition of dried shrimp with the preserved vegetable gave it more texture as well. Not too shabby at all.

The steamed pumpkin cake had a similar texture to the rice cakes except the shredded pumpkin was evident here imparting a slight orangy hue to the cake. There was also a generous serve of dried shrimp incorporated into the pumpkin cake matrix which provided a little bite to it. The black sauce was not overly sweet and the chili sauce was tasty and spicy without being overpowering.

The yam cake tasted pretty good as well but I still preferred the pumpkin version as I found the yam bits slightly too smooth and would have liked them a little coarser. Overall the fare Rong Ji Cooked Food has to offer is rather tasty and the testimonial of the little queue I saw was definitely not a bluff.

Interestingly enough, I saw another stall a few stalls away also selling Chinese steamed cakes (other varieties). There was a also a little queue here and the vendors were working like machines churning out cake after cake.

Even though some of these looked rather interesting, I had definitely hit my savory cake quota for the day. I'm not sure if I'll come back here just for breakfast savory cakes, maybe it's better as a lunch or dinner joint when more stalls are opened and I can order some meat to accompany the cakes.
